Well, I guess I'm not going to enjoy my Tess DVD. Either I was just plain stupid and didn't notice it mentioned somewhere, or just 'assumed,' but I happily received it in the mail yesterday. I was looking forward to watching it. Put it in my DVD and get "not made for your region." So I guess I'm just a lowly U.S. citizen. Well I'm not spending any amount of dollars to buy a region free DVD player for one DVD. So I want to return it..and Amazon U.K. return policy...unopened and in shrink wrap. Hmm...now how would I have known that this didn't work for me, had I not opened it up? Lovely. Not a happy camper here.

Amazon wouldn't return it anyway because they clearly state on their ordering format that the disc is Region 2 and to check you can play it. Anyway, the problem is easily solved. Assuming you have a DVD player on your computer, just download the free media player called Videolan www.videolan.org/It downloads in moments and will play practically anything (except , it seems, stuff recorded on realplayer) It doesn't seem to mind what region - and I've used it over and over with four different region formats. Does screen caps and everything Happy viewing I've watched most of it now - heaps better than on Youtube (but thanks anyway, mrspimplebottom ) And have to say, Hans has the best costumes in the whole thing. Well, Tess is practically in rags most of the time!

REALLY? Cuz I tried the computer thing and nothing happened..but I was using Media Player. I work for a Tech school..and one of our guys here said he has some software that can "remove" the thing that only makes it play certain regions so he'd give that a shot. He promised me it wouldn't damage the DVD. Another person told me I could change the region on my DVD player/recorder up to 5 times..however, it's not PALS so that won't work. I'll give your suggestion a try and let you know. I'm happier now..let's hope it works!!

Virtual its only by the grace of God and real hard work the whole cast didnt end up wearing rags, the set got broken into and the costume trailer burned down, some of the stuff was the real deal and worth a fortune, the chief costume man thaught enough of Hans to lend him cuff links from the Tess era, they melted :'(the poor people had to go into the nearest town buy up the tattyest material they could and dress every one from scratch

The Region coding is an attempt to control piracy and the viewing of material in areas where it has not yet been released. There are many ways to overcome it (for people who have legitimately purchased the material for thier own use ) You can usually change the region about five times on computer media players like WInDVD. You can get your DVD player "chipped" by some technie and there are other hacks. But why would you bother when Videolan works so well so easily? BTW for all the fans for whom English is not their first language, the Tess DVD has English subtitles. They are I guess, intended for the hard-of-hearing because they have things like "someone knocks at the door". useful resource for everyone in some places where the accent makes it challenging to catch exactly what they've said. (Hans' diction is as usual, excellent)

Virgil, would you believe when I downloaded the Videolan on my home computer (uses Vista) the DVD came out all "blocky." I don't know if I need to download a different version, or if it had something to do with Windows Vista. Or the coding in my computer, as suggested by our computer guy here. Anyway..I tried it on my Windows Media Player, and it gave me the message about only changing 5 times...so I did it! Watched almost an hour as I had to go somewhere. I don't use my Windows Media Player for anything, really..so not concerned. If you have any suggestion about how to get the Videolan to work, I'd be grateful.

I have no idea why it would come out 'blocky'. maybe you need a different version? I haven't had to deal with Vista; know nothing about it. All I can sugest si that you google troubleshooting videolan or check the site where you downloaded - check you downloaded the right version. Also check again. You know what computers are like- . Tomorrow it may work just fine. Or maybe you just need to delete and download again - may not have downloaded properly. Hope you get it sorted Mine wasn't working properly today on my desktop - kept closing down when I tried to do screencaps. So I moved the process to my laptop (don't tell the boss) and it worked just fine.) The smiliness Jessie mentioned And the bit Lydia referred to where he's speaking about how his character SHOUTS ALL THE TIME!

Hans here looks really happy and cheerful. ;D In the Czech Republic, DVD Tess of the Durbervilles can not find, much damage.

Virgil...went home at lunch and reinstalled Videolan and it seemed to work just fine. I was in a hurry last night as I had to go out, so maybe I messed it up. Now I have to change my Windows Media Player region back to 1.
