Oh,Hans doesn´t have scottish accent in Tess, well really i watched him in half light and in Tess and i cannot to distinguish the difference between both accents, i suposse is more easy for a british person to difference the accents, only i can to distinguish the difference between the american and english accent ;D.I thought too, that he had scottish accent in Tess because i don´t know why but when he talks his words or his pronunciation sounds a little more strong than the pronunciation of the another actors in this serie, but i guess that is his particular way of talking, i´m not sure

There are so many accents in ENglish language - not only between countries but regions within those countries and also between social class and education levels. In "Tess" many of the characters- Tess, the workers, her family etc, are using a "Wessex" accent (supposedly, I don't know how successfully) Hans and Eddie - as more upper class and educated are using a more RP speech. (RP _ Received Pronunciation - the classic BBC 'proper speech) At least that's my take - but I'm just a colonial with a Strine accent

yeah, :)here in my country (Spain), the accents are different in every city as well, above all the pronunciation is very different between people from the North and the South of the country.Indeed , every person from the same city has his particular way of talking, but anyway i love the british accent much more than the american ,because they pronounce better the words and for me is more easy to understand what they are saying if they aren´t talking very fast ;D

Im born and breed Wessex, lol, so we speak pretty much like the poor people of that time. Like trackeer' instead of tractor. If you get me, so im guessing in the program it his character that has to speak posh. So yes Virgil, your right, those accents still exist here today. I was reading the book online the otherday and it metions Froom. Thats the olde' english name of where i live! So my hometown features in the book Lydia xxx

Hi every one! I'm very glad to have found guys whom I can share my love for Hans I am listening to BBC audiobook every day when I'm walking to lectures .More often people would see a girl who kept talking to her Ipod (that's because I was trying to repeat word after word in case you're wondering if I'm crazy like others! ) Then my imagination would take me back to the scenes where Hans in and all the other scenes in the book that could have been in the series! I dare say that he does not have a Scottish accent in Tess but it is a bit stronger than an average Southern accent or may be he just did it for the series! Even Alec is supposedly an intellectual and high-class in the society, his accent perhaps is still affected by the local I wish I can pick up a charming Scottish accent like Hans in Half light . I guess two years in Scotland is not enough for me but Hans inspired me to do my best!

For those who don't know, Wessex is a general term given to the counties in England of Somerset, Dorset and North Devon. And to help those of tyou from other countries - in Tess, Hans does not have a Scottish accent, it is as Virgil says, a more upper class 'received pronunciation' accent. Typically British!!

Aww, thanks for the explanation , then the typical british accent could be the London accent? I mean,Hans in Tess is talking with a London accent for example?

It is true that here speaks Hans otherwise, has a different accent. Was a mistake that I thought he speaks with the Scottish accent. Now I listened and heard the difference in his speaking. Is to know even if I am not from Great Britain.

yeah Jessie i know that Hans in Tess has an upper class accent , but which is the typical british accent? for example in the TV news of your country or in the BBC channel in what accent are they talking,in London accent maybe?. Here in tv the people talks with the accent of the area central of Spain ,the accent of Madrid for example , the capital of my country so i thought maybe in England the "official accent" was that ;D

Dakota, there really is not 'typical' british accent, there are SO many! I, for example, was born in Kent and have lived in Cornwall nearly all my life, but I have neither a London/thingyney accent nor a Cornish one! If you listen to the interview with Hans on disc 2 of the Dr Zhivago DVD's , that would be his 'normal' accent.
Just wanted to discuss the topic of the story of Tess, written by Thomas Hardy - how popular is Hardy's work in the US? Did anyone know that Hardy based his story loosely on a real person, called Martha Brown, who he witnessed being hung for the murder of her husand when he was 16 years old. It was believed at the time that Martha Brown had been abused by her husband and that the murder was in fact self defence. This is Hardy's 'Tess'.
