My vote is for a purge... says the cluttered minimalist.
Maybe if you turn to your silent musing to violent screaming...
just face it and scream
"I DON'T NEED YOU ANYMORE!!!!!!!!" as you throw it into the bin!
It could be catharic!

LOL....A cluttered minimalist. I like that, that's definately me. There are definately somethings that are fit only for the bin, and somethings that are definately ebayable! How does that saying go....One man's junk is another man's treasure! Or in this case...one woman's junk!

I LIKE it!!!!
It's the books stacked up next to the bed and the cds on the self by the bathtub (next to the olive oil candle that's so nice I haven't lit it since I brought it home from Tuscany two years ago) that I have difficulty parting with -- and the glitchy DVDs that were played too much. I have three copies of THE PRINCESS BRIDE -- one of them is a coaster basically. They all have different covers, two are signed by the author, and I can't decide which ones I should part with -- I use to have 6 copies and gave away three already. I have THE PROPHET in three sizes -- one is leather bound that was a gift, one the regular "reading" paperback, and a tiny little version I carry in my messenger bag. And too much persian love poetry, probably, than is healthy. And boots. I have a hard time letting go of boots. Heals -- hell no problem, out they go! I can wear out a pair of strappy sandals in a summer and never look back. I have a profoundly anemic shoe collection, I am told. A nice little collection of pashminas though -- bought almost entirely at the 3for12 booth next to the Cornish Pasty stand in Covent Garden. And instruments -- something sacred about instruments my brother gives me (though Im just a foster parent to them really), even the broken ones -- and I don't play!
To be honest - I'm a little suspiscious if I walk into someone's house and there's no evidence of music... my least favorite version of sterility.
But truth is, aside from Polish, Italian, and my favorite artisans pottery (a girls gotta eat occassionally, afterall), that's pretty much the extent of my personal possessions -- books, cds, dvds, boots, and a few instruments...
what are you planning on siphoning? Maybe you'll inspire me to part with one of the William Goldman repeats...

" books, cds, dvds, boots, and a few instruments..."
That pretty much sums up the extent of my worldly possessions too. My books and cd's are staying with me, as are some of my dvd's! I have a copy of The Princess Bride as well (somewhere)...I also have a small collection of black candles (whic I absolutely love), but I have left them in the bag I bought them in.
" I am told. A nice little collection of pashminas though -- bought almost entirely at the 3for12 booth next to the Cornish Pasty stand in Covent Garden. "
Awww I love pashminas, and scarves in general. I am almost addicted to them. Next time you plan a trip to London, let me know. I'll catch the train into London & we can go pashmina shopping! lol
I am willing to part with quite afew dvd's that I know I won't bother watching again. I will get rid of my Harry Potter dvd's, plus a few others which I need to make a list of. There's probably other random items that I will get rid of too!

Sigh....February BLAHS are starting to set in! Maybe the Olympics will up my spirits a bit!!
Well...since we are on the subject of purging....I get to tackle the bowels of my basement this weekend. I have 7 years of junk to venture through!!! The sad thing is...I moved with this junk and still haven't unpacked it from their boxes. University textbooks? Why? I really don't plan on going back!! There are also some scary cd's and audio cassettes down there from my teenage years. Did I really have that bad of taste in music? (Not to worry Gg...it has improved!) And as for the audio cassettes...I don't even have a player to play them on anymore!!! Why?? I just keep asking myself that question...it helps me get rid of stuff! I am hoping to feel a lot lighter after this weekend. There is just something about getting rid of stuff that is almost euphoric!
Following the purging though will be the construction. Not sure what will be worse!
Good luck Cat with the decluttering!

Thanks Jenny, and good luck with tackling your basement this weekend. Getting through seven years worth of "junk" is no easy task.

Try ebay for those textbooks Jenny. Just had a purge myself and truly, once the bin has been emptied and i can't go retreive it from the bin (and yes, i have done that) you never look back. Out of sight, out of mind. You'll never miss it.
Quickly has check of house
... enter and look right. Piano. (I don't play but it serves, right?) One guitar, one viola, one empty viola case. Can't play them either but it's evidence OK? and speakers.
I just cleared five magazine boxes of music books from the hall stand and put them in bookshelves in another room.
Next room, all the AV equipment (including, laugh if you will, a turntable for my vinyl LPs) *I'll explain in PM if you don't know what they are*.
And of course, the CD collection, i pod cables (i pod's in my purse)
Poster of overseas orchestra gig (not mine)
Come visit Gigi. I think I pass
One final comment re your preceived "bad taste in music" Jenny.
Wait till it's fashionable again!
Unless you have indie or industry connections, you're at the mercy of what the media, record companies expose you to. You get used to stuff after you've been 'brianwashed' esp if your friends reinforce it. And some of the time we cringe because the memories of how gauche we were at the time are so intrinsically linked to the music we enjoyed at that time.
I call my collection "eclectic". It's educational too - the history of popular music!

I love the thought of having musical instruments all over the place in a house. They make for wonderful photographs. I think I need to visit both Gg's & Virgil's homes respectively!

Some of my music is more on the indie side. There use to be a bar that I would get into that played live music - mostly touring Canadian bands trying to make a name for themselves. I would of course support them by buying their cassettes. I should google to see where their music has taken them. My Brother-in-Law is also a musician and he has passed on a lot of music from bands that he has met throughout the years from festivals, conferences and other events. There really are some amazing musicians out there.
There is of course the 80's drivel, but still fun to listen to now and then. My 5 year old has discovered some of this and has been rocking out in his room every day. He is currently listening to The Specials, Duran Duran, Stray Cats and Quiet Riot! We'll see what else he discovers after today.
Musical instruments are another story...piano, 3 guitars, a keyboard (currently set up in the basement), a kids drum kit (also in the basement), recorder - I'm sure I'm missing some - but all played. They do not make up my clutter. They are purposely and strategically placed in the house to ensure maximum playing.
Okay...off to purge. If you don't hear from me for a couple of days...assume I got lost or buried.

All this talk of musical instruments has fuelled my desire to own a cello. I just love the shape of cellos! What a pity that I can't actually play this instrument.

That never stopped me Cat! I own a guitar but have absolutley no clue how to even tune it let alone play anything on it.

lol...I attempted to try and learn how to play the guitar, but I didn't like how the strings cut into my fingers, so I stopped. If I bought a cello it would be nothing more than a house decoration.

I come from a musical family. I played the soprano flute in the past, but it is already ancient history. Now I have a flute in my drawer, where only lies. I wanted the piano as a child, but was too expensive and also have a small room in the apartment. I wanted the acoustic guitar about 4 years ago, but I lost courage.

SO!?!?! What got jettisoned??
I come from three generations of musicians/vocalists/composer-songwriters on one side of my family. So I've got ancient instruments (most of them stringed-things) hanging on walls and propped on shelves. I lived with two musicians and a singer at conservatory, so there's never been a break. I was always amazed that the hicky-necked Stratavarious players bought seats on planes for their instruments when they traveled! I guess you get a grant for a centuries old instrument you treat it like a child -- but to a then dancer who traveled primarily with medical tape, a couple pairs of rehearsal shoes, a tube of ambesol, and seamed leggings, well -- well it seems like a very big commitment!!! I've seen nurseries that were less fussy than the room where my brother keeps the instruments he plays. Humidifiers and rugs and curtains... I blew into a flute and then a piccolo for five years but I gave them to an intercity charity when our relationship ended.
But I want to hear what was unearthed in the basement!!! Love letters? Your old "human trash can" costume from 1984? How about those embarrassing pictures of you in your childhood bedroom after you got to decorate it yourself for the first time -- and you realize in retrospect why your mother didn't let you have the opportunity til then!
