A R.I.P to Steve Irwin, who passed away doing what he loved most. Though I'm not a fan of his, his death was sudden, and I feel sorry for his family that he left behind. He did a lot of good for environmentalism despite some of his whackier behaviour.

Indeed. It's tragic for his wife and young kiddies.
He had a genuine love of nature and enthusiasm for what he was doing , something that can't be taken for granted from the Aussie male unless it relates to sport. And much as we might cringe and hope the rest of the world realises we're not all like that, my neighbour is very much like that! And you could do worse, a genuine straight up guy.
Somehow it doesn't seem surprising that he would meet his end in an unconventional manner. Ironic though. Many are killed by crocodiles and alligators. It's the third recorded death by stingray in Australia.

I completely agree. It is so ironic though about the stingray. Someone on community.livejournal.com/metaquotes/ said something I thought was pretty neat: That God asked Irwin how he'd like to go, in a plane crash, a car crash or a stingray barb and Irwin picked the Ray. Makes sense for someone who loved our environment so much even if he did make his living out of poking things with a stick.
