Thought I'd start a thread so people can share lyrics they love that follow them through a day or time. I'd of course like it (because I'm so into seeing into everyone's head) if the lyrics were accompanied by an explanation of how you heard it first, what it meant to you, why it's a favorite, whatever. Lyrics don't have to be complete or ever completely accurate for that matter and if you alter them deliberating it would be interesting to know why. Also thought if we shared them it would get us hooked into music we may not have otherwise appreciated.
Maybe.

I'll it start it off. This one one was part of my primal memory because my mother was/is a devotee. She got it when it was a new vinyl album, then bought the cd -- and it's cover is broken and tattered. It was on all the time and you could tell what kind of day she was having by what track she'd go to. Later, when I was in the hospital with an injury that effectively changed my life early on, the words of this song were one of the only thing (well, the drugs were helpful) that helped me find a peaceful place. Existential peace:
“Moon Shadow”
Yes, I’m being followed by a Moon Shadow, Moon Shadow, Moon Shadow.
Leaping and hopping on a Moon Shadow, Moon Shadow, Moon Shadow.
And if I ever lose my hands, Lose my plow, lose my land. Oh if I ever lose my hands, Away, I won’t have to work no more.
And if I ever lose my eyes, If my colors all run dry. Yes if I ever lose my eyes, Away, I won’t have to cry no more.
Yes, I’m being followed by a Moon Shadow, Moon Shadow, Moon Shadow.
Leaping and hopping on a Moon Shadow Moon Shadow, Moon Shadow.
And if I ever lose my legs, I won’t moan and I won’t beg. Oh, if I ever lose my legs, Away, I won’t have to walk no more.
And if I ever lose my mouth, All my teeth, North and South, Away, Oh if I ever lose my mouth, I won’t have to talk…
Cat Stevens Teaser and the Fire Cat

Wow, I love that. I don't think I know that song. It's perfect, because my boyfriend and I just saw the Tom Brokaw special on Aron Ralston, the guy who got trapped in the canyon in Utah and had to amputate his own arm to get out alive. We didn't expect it to be so moving, but it was. It was a profound and spiritual experience for him that has changed his life for the better because of his deeper gratitude for life and loved ones.

One of my favorite and most personally meaningful songs:
The Lazarus Heart
by Sting
He looked beneath his shirt today There was a wound in his chest so deep and wide From the wound a lovely flower grew From somewhere deep inside He turned around to face his mother To show her the wound in his breast that burned like a brand But the sword that cut him open Was the sword in his mother's hand
(chorus) Every day another miracle Not even death could keep us apart To sacrifice a life for yours I'd be the blood of the Lazarus Heart The blood of the Lazarus Heart
While the sword was his protection The wound itself would give him power The power to remake himself At the time of his darkest hour She said the wound would give him courage and pain The kind of pain that you can't hide From the wound a lovely flower grew From somewhere deep inside
(chorus)
Birds on the roof of my mother's house I've no stones to chase them away Birds on the roof of my mother's house Will sit on my own roof someday They fly at the window they fly at the door Where does she get the strength to fight them anymore? She counts all her children as a shield against the pain Lifts her eyes to the sky like a flower to the rain
Every day another miracle Not even death could keep us apart To sacrifice a life for yours I'd be the blood of the Lazarus Heart The blood of the Lazarus Heart
This was a song about a dream Sting had about his mother, who was dying of cancer at the time. Although my mother wasn't dying of cancer, I found the lyrics described my feelings and our complex relationship perfectly. Another lovely aspect of this song, if you've ever heard it, is Sting actually sings it with a joyful, exuberant melody. It adds another dimension to what would otherwise be a morose and melodramatic song. Brilliant.

Hi, to start, i only know the last song : "Lazarus Heart", by Sting. :)But i was fortuned to grow up in a home where both parents are true music lovers and in result I learned to appreciate all kinds (well, except the must strange ones..loll) . So, my special song- i have to say that it was quite difficult to choose 1 song, because there are a few songs very meaningfull to me- in spite of being recent, it tells a lot about me, specially in those days which i fell must vulnerable and angry with the "world". And end up by hurting those clooser to me. Please don't think that i'm crazy or instable because of the song cuz i'm not!!!lolol but everyone has a bad day sometime... Here it is "Till the clouds clear", by Lamb What's left to say with all that's come and gone? Words get in the way and anyway the devils got your tongue And a storm grows in side, and there's nowhere to hide it's gonna blow your cover sky high If you let this thing go, it's gonna burn, it's burn! You're gonna take the whole world with you when you go. Oh, oh, oh what you gonna do? When the storm takes over Oh, oh, oh what you gonna do? When the storm takes over So here you are, demons screaming in your head You try to shout them out, but they just get louder in stead! And nothing you do can seem to break through this darkness smothering you When it takes hold, your heart turns cold The very soul sleeps out of you Oh, oh, oh what you gonna do? When the storm takes over Can you hold this thing? Can you hold this thing? till the clouds clear.... Hope you like it. Oh, and Gg this was a great ideia to getting to know us better....good job ;D kisses, Patricia

don't stifle yourself by narrowing it down to one song. What I listen to changes yearly, seasonally, daily -- whatever "sings" to me at that moment in my life. SO really post away!

Sway by Strangelove because it was a pretty accurate description of my life at the time (never want to be 16 again ). Thankfully I've moved on a bit since then, but still think it's luverly & more people should know about Strangelove. Sway Sway, To the breeze all around of this loneliest day And pray I pray to this drink that can wipe me away Far away For today My life don't belong to me Don't belong to me Don't belong to me So I sway. Sway, In the city of grey and it's meaningless day I crave, crave, crave For something or anything to wipe me away Far away Far away My life don't belong to me Don't belong to me Don't belong to me Love don't belong to me Don't belong to me Don't belong to me The world's out of reach The world's out of reach The world's out of reach of me. Sway, Wipe the blood of the eyes onto blood on the hands You slave, Slave of disorder keep scraping away Every day Becomes every day My life don't belong to me Don't belong to me Don't belong to me Love don't belong to me Don't belong to me Don't belong to me Let me tell you Nothing belongs to me It don't belong to me It don't belong to me The world's out of reach The world's out of reach The world's out of reach The world's out of reach of me. SWAY yes I'll sway Forever to stumble across of the flickering day Yes I'll sway Reaching out for the bottle Reach out for the end of the day. Reach out for the end of the day.

Hey You, You lost your only friend, You can’t believe your broken heart will ever mend, But every mountain has its faces That’d make you want to stop, On this so unwelcome journey, From the bottom to the top,
You’ve got to
Move along, I believe there’s something beautiful to see, Move along, I believe there’s something beautiful, Just waiting for you and me.
I know, you’ll never count the tears you’ve cried, Though you’ve asked a million questions None could ever tell you why A single soul is chosen to be the one put to the test But there will be consolation for a heart that never rests.
The years will make us older, The winters make us colder And there’s one more thing I’ve come to know for sure.
There’s no bitterness that smolders, No chip on any shoulders, That a random act of kindness couldn’t cure.
Hey You, You lost your only friend. You can’t believe your broken heart will ever mend. But every mountain has its faces That’d make you want to stop On this so unwelcome journey From the bottom to the top
You’ve got to,
Move along, I believe there’s something beautiful to see,
Move along, I believe there’s something beautiful, just waiting for you and me.
GBS to the rescue once again.
Mine has been a challenging 2004 -- here's to something beautiful for all of us in the year to come.
AND if anyone was affected by the catastrophy of the these last days, my, our, thoughts to you.

The devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina brought a snippet from this song to my mind. Of course at the present our preoccupation must be the rescue and repatriation of those made homeless but then attention will be directed to the future of New Orleans itself. If there's any possibility that these hurricanes are caused/ exacerbated by global warming, is there anything we can do?
I'm sure there are ample opportunities to help so I won't post websites where you can donate, Gigi has already posted one great suggestion
SALthingyER
We are a rock revolving Around a golden sun We are a billion children Rolled into one So when I hear about The hole in the sky Salthingyer wells in my eyes We climb the highest mountain We’ll make the desert bloom We’re so ingenious We can walk on the moon But when I hear of how The forests have died Salthingyer wells in my eyes
I have lived for love But now that’s not enough For the world I love is dying (and now I’m crying) And time is not a friend (no friend of mine) As friends we’re out of time And it’s slowly passing by..yyy...yyy...yyy Right before our eyes
We light the deepest ocean Send photographs of mars We’re so enchanted by How clever we are Why should one baby Feel so hungry she cries Salthingyer wells in my eyes
I have lived for love But now that’s not enough For the world I love is dying (and now I’m crying) And time is not a friend (no friend of mine) As friends we’re out of time And it’s slowly passing by..yyy...yyy...yyy Right before our eyes
We are a rock revolving Around a golden sun We are a billion children Rolled into one What will I think of me The day that I die Salthingyer wells in my eyes
Salthingyer wells in my eyes

okay, I like this topic. Good idea. I think it's also a good way to discover eachothers music taste.
Well, this song is very special to me. It touches my heart everytime I hear it. It's a "dreamy" song. The vocal lines impress me. I don't know why actually, it shows the meaning of longing to me. When I heard it for the first time, I fell in love with it. Sometimes I just listen to this song the whole day. When I'm feeling sad, I turn this on. It also offers me an opportunity to escape from this world, into my dreams. I think of beautiful scenery's and peace. And last month, the song came even closer to me. My grandfather passed away. Well, I'm still searching for him. Don't know what to do. Anyway, just check the lyrics please and with the music it's even better.
Nightwish - Ever Dream
Ever felt away with me Just once that all I need Entwined in finding you one day Ever felt away without me My love, it lies so deep Ever dream of me
Would you do it with me Heal the scars and change the stars Would you do it for me Turn loose the heaven within
I'd take you away Castaway on a lonely day Bosom for a teary cheek My song can but borrow your grace
Ever felt away with me Just once that all I need Entwined in finding you one day Ever felt away without me My love, it lies so deep Ever dream of me
Come out, come out wherever you are So lost in your sea Give in, give in for my touch For my taste for my lust
Ever felt away with me Just once that all I need Entwined in finding you one day Ever felt away without me My love, it lies so deep Ever dream of me
Your beauty cascaded on me In this white night fantasy
