It’s funny that no one else has mentioned this. But here goes. I remember seeing pics and clips of the 1965 film version of Dr Zhivago a few times before the I saw the 2002 version. So I naturally had the image in my head of Omar Sharif as always being what Dr Zhivago was meant to look like. Omar Sharif has a cute face but he has a moustache. And a very bold presence about him. ( I have nothing against moustaches by the way. I actually like them.) When I first saw a few clips of the 2002 version of DZ and first saw Hans on there, I didn’t think he could be the Dr Zhivago in the film . He looked so different from Omar Sharif! He looked younger, much more shy and he didn’t have a moustache! But Dr Zhivago has a moustache! I waited a bit for the real Dr Zhivago ( who I expected to look just like Omar Sharif) to come on screen but no one else did. Then I looked up the 2002 film online and was surprised to see that Hans was Dr Zhivago! That made me want to watch the film even more. It’s very different form the first film. Omar and Hans are very different.

I think Hans Matheson was very refreshing as Yuri Zhivago. He portrayed Yuri as someone who’s young, well mannered and is always trying to do the right thing. But he’s only human and he gets lonely as well. Xx

But I think even Hans himself has a moustache now?? He did in Jericho and his music video Take it by the Reins.

Omg I’ve come across 2 versions of the full 2002 Dr Zhivago film on YouTube which are completely free to watch. Both are quite good quality and may even be in HD. 1 version is split into 2 2 hour halves and is in English but a Russian (?) voice actor is speaking over in Russian throughout the film. It’s uploaded by someone called Andrey. Another version just shows the whole film in 1 go and is dubbed entirely in Spanish I think? I’ve just realized that the 2002 DZ film has a few scenes which are deleted on amazon prime but are not deleted on YouTube. There’s a scene with Yuri and Tonya together, soon after Yuri returns to her after working in the hospital with Lara, which is deleted. There’s also a scene on the beautiful train ride to Variyinko which is deleted. It’s a scene where the train is slowing down and numerous people are shown dead, having being hanged, in the countryside parallel to the train track. Very very sad. Tonya’s father covers Sasha’s face so he doesn’t see. Tonya calls out to the peasants who are still alive in the area and asks them what’s going on? They call out Streinokov! I don’t know if anymore scenes are deleted on amazon prime. But even if it’s just these 2 scenes, it’s still amazing for someone who’s a big fan of the film to see them for the 1st time.

Just saw a clip of DZ on YouTube again. OK it’s not HD. The quality of amazon prime is much better obv. I’d still recommend buying the film on amazon prime or the dvd. But the quality onntoutube isn’t bad either.

In the 2002 version of DZ I think the director portrayed the reason behind Yuri having an affair was this; Yuri married his childhood sweetheart/teenage crush. He was therefore relatively inexperienced with women when he married her and probably married her too young. He and Tonya were also friends for many years in a brother/sister like way after they 1st met as they were too young for a romantic relationship then. Their relationship was therefore confusing. They were brother and sister 1 minute, then they were best friends, then they became lovers. Many relationships are like this; where there’s a thin line between being friends and lovers. They’re often happy relationships. This is why he was happy with Tonya and always missed her. I think Tonya was the real love of his life in this version. But he was older when he met Lara at the hospital. He was away from the cushy life of his rich adopted parents and he was in the real world where there was war, poverty and wild women like Lara trying to murder their stepdad boyfriends.. It must have been exciting for him having someone so different showing an attraction in him. Someone who’s more of a wild lover than a warm, safe friend. The loneliness and the terrifying violence of war he witnessed while being so far away from his family had a part to play in his affair too. It reminds me a bit of the story in the film Two Moon Junction.
