For no particular special reason I have recently watched four movies with this guy in them and I'm really impressed.
Y Tu Mama Tambien Not my favourite but I guess the ' break through' role.
Amores Perros - Not for sentimental doglovers. A really powerful film.
Motorcycle Diaries Just terrific Really interesting and runs the full gamut of emotions from funny to thought provoking to uplifting and heartbreakinging sad. One of those movies where the audience just sits still at the end composing themselves during the credits for a public appearance.
Bad Education - Very interesting Almodovar movie Not for the prudish
What a range of demanding roles. He really is a terrific actor - and kind of cute too. He has really expressive eyes - a bit like Hans maybe.
I guess it will be only a matter of time before he 'goes Hollywood' - I'm not sure if I even want to see him in English language films.
What do you people think? Let's hear it for the little guys!

Gael García is one of the most famous actors in Mexico. He has a friend named Diego Luna (he appears too in Y tu mamá también) and both are part of a new actors generation from mexican movies. His rol in Amores Perros is one of my favorites, I think he's a great actor

I'm right there with you on Gael Garcia Bernel -- he seems to making very conscious artistic decisions -- they're billing "Babel" as his first US Indy -- which is amazing considering how much Hollywood "buzz" he's had, and for how long. Without even a speedbump of thought when "Bad Education" came out.
But wasn't "The King" also a US Indy?

Yes, GG, The King is a indy film and it's strange but that film doesn't have distribution in mexico yet

I just watched "The King" - I didn't like it much. Always a bad sign when I'm more engrossed in the house's decor and the shots of everyday suburban neighbourhoods than the action.
Found it difficult to identify or sympathise with any of the characters and couldn't deal with the possible symbolism. But maybe i shouldn't watch DVDs on a Friday night when I'm wiped out by a stressful week and two glasses of cheap red. Will I not ever learn?
And Gael - keep the hair longer hey?
Has anyone else seen "Dot the I"? a strange Brit indie, also featuring Virgin Queen's Tom Hardy. He (Gael) was good in that, may have been his first English speaking role.

I've seen those first four you mentioned, Virgil. The Motorcycle Diaries is definitely the standout for me, but I really did love Y Tu Mama Tambien, which I first watched after Alfonso Cauron did Harry Potter and mentioned similarities between the characters (!?). I don't know, I just really enjoy character-driven films with loads of dysfunction, for some reason.
Amores Perros I couldn't really get into so much. The whole "Ritchie" thing go so annoying I was hanging out for the end, but the scene where ... well, I suppose I shouldn't post any spoilers, but the scene where all the characters sort of 'come together', if you will, was really very good, I thought. It was interesting, though.

Actually, Gael has two new movies: Babel and La ciencia del sueño (sorry, I don't know the original name) a Michael Godry film, the director of The eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. I think he was brilliant in Amores perros and Y tu Mamá También. About Alfonso Cuarón, yoy can also see movies like Great Expectations (with Ethan Hawke and Gwneth Paltrow, I love this movie) or Children of Men.

Yeah, Babel still isn't out here, unfortunately. I think I might have to talk someone into coming to see with me at the cinema when it is, though.
I didn't know there was another new one, so thanks. I'll have to see if I can find out if it's being released here, too.
