when hans is in the scene just focus on his eyes. if you think doctor zhivago makes you cry now, you'll sob like a baby. No seriously try it because there is so much emotion and power in his eyes it's just extrodinary.

You are so right
You could say Hans' eyes are what got him the role :-
Anyone who's seen "Les Miserables" can attest to the attraction of 'the eyes'.
And while we are on the subject of the DVd Interview, watch his eyes when he talks of "saying goodbye to someone in his life".

yeah, it feels like he's reliving that moment when he found out a loved one died or something. No serioulsy, I got my hands on Mists of Avalon and again it's his eyes that got me. It was like he had no choice in what he was doing. The saddness and longing in his eyes just made me want to give him a hug. He really wanted a relationship with his father but that pregnant dog of an aunt got in the way. i'm sure others out there felt that same feeling as he did. Les Miserables, I know what you mean, especially when he's with Cossette, you can see his eyes dancing. I think I'm falling in love with his eyes.
Also at the end of Doctor Zhivago, when he see's his son in the window, the look he gives, does he mean to show that he knows it's his son or does he realise that when he hears Lara's voice. He looks a little confused as to who the boy is up until he hears Lara. Also right at the end, Keira Knightly made me sob even harder when she says to Yury jr. "let's have a race" and she gets arrested. [get's up to get a box of tissues]

You know what I thought as I watched that scene in Dr. Z as he sees his son through the window -- aside from this symbolic parallel with first seeing Lara through the window -- was that this was the same child actor who had been baby Yuri -- so here is Yuri looking at his baby double and at first "hmm, cute kid,...reminds me of myself (haha)", then "wait a minute, he does look like me -- am I losing my mind? am I dying and beholding myself?" -- and then Lara's voice bringing him to the estatic realization that he is again a father and this is his son, his spitting image, and his connection all these years later to Lara who is now just outside the pane of glass once more -- no further away than she had been that first day their eyes met...and yet -- every bit as inaccessible as that day -- just beyond that glass.
This moment of both ultimate hope and ultimate loss.
beautiful existential angst

Have to agree with that. I haven't seen Dr Zhivago specifically, but what I have seen of Canone Inverso (which I ordered just last week, actually) there is a lot of expression in his eyes. Certainly more than the majority of actors I've watched.
For Dr Zhivago, you mean? Or Les Miserables?

Yeah! I think Hans' acting is more stronger with that extraordinary expression in his eyes.
