This is good! It looks a little different. Hans is there any frowns. But it's almost the same.

I watched the old ITV version of Tess last week and I have to say, I wasn't all that impressed. I think the BBC came up top again with its remake.

You can vote for Tess Of The D'Urbervilles and Gemma Arterton in the TVChoice & TV Quick Awards 2009. For some inexplicable reason, Hans and Eddie aren't in the lengthy list of candidates for Best Male Actor. That's ridiculous - they have to have been heaps better than some of those on the list. You don't have to vote in all the categories, just fast track to the relevant ones.

Just voted, I can't believe Hans and Eddie weren't on the best actor list! Thanks for the link Virgil, I'd forgotten voting was open. I hadn't realised Tess was on there but wanted to vote in a couple of other categories anyway. The Tudors was also on one of the categories, I can't remember which one, but I voted for it anyway.

I have this version on dvd that the Daily Mail gave away quite some time ago. I haven't watched it as yet because I prefer the Gemma / Hans / Eddie version. And speaking of the Gemma / Hans / Eddie version, I bought it off of Amazon a few days ago. I've just finished watching it and I'd forgotten how good it is. And I really enjoyed watching Angels and Demons!

That's the same lap writing board from the "pics" thread.

I've just seen the old version simply out of curiosity (sometimes I wish I wasn't so curious... ). Have to agree with Laura that it's not at all impressive. The acting was pretty wooden and lacking any emotions. The strawberry scene is ridiculously hilarious when it comes to sounds - it's like they're eating cucumbers there, not strawberries! Not to mention the encounters of Alec and Tess in the farm. Hans' portraying of Alec's emotions was just brilliant! The little tear dripping down his face when he first hears about the husband followed by the mastery possessive attitude is marvelous! The '98 Alec kept the same expressionless face at all times. It's like Hans' Alec was a real person not simply a book character... The only similarity I find between the book and the two versions is the revolting character of Angel Clare. He's absolutely disgusting in all three. I couldn't stand him in the book, hated him in the 2008 version, and didn't even bother seeing him for more than it was necessary in the 1998 one.

The only other adaptation I know is Polanski's Tess, but it's been years since I last saw this and I can't remember how they handled the strawberry scene. Generally I like comparing different adaptations (looking forward to the new Emma!)
