Has no one else realized that this film is the New Testament? We just saw this film in our "Bible and Film" class, and this is no stretch. Look for the biblical characters, almost everyone in the film is one. Some examples: Ray (lead singer) is Paul, the bass player is Peter, the keyboardist is John... there's a ton of it in there.

Brian's brother: John the Baptist...forerunner to Jesus Christ.
Brian: the Resurrected Jesus Christ.
Karen: Mary Magdalene.
Hughie: Joseph of Arimathea...custodian of Christ's body.
Beano: James
Peter (Les), James (Beano) and John (Tony) were part of Christ's (Brian) inner circle (original band members).
Ray (Paul) came along and was particularly resented by Peter (Les) over the issue of Jew/Gentile debate. James (Beano) played a conciliatory role at the Jerusalem conference to unite the factions.
