Congratulations to all the Women's skaters, but especially to Joannie Rochette who went on to win Bronze following the death of her mother. Truly a passionate brave woman!
One thing I love about the Olympics is you get to watch sports that are not normally broadcast on television. There really are some amazing sports and athletes in the world.

I saw this afternoon television recording of women's finals. JR is a very brave and I bow to its sporty performance.

Well as an American with no particular personal competency in any of these sports to be able to really judge any one performance based on anything more than my eyeball view of who crossed the finish line first, and because our national personality is still often much that of a c&cky teenager's, I can't comment on the judged sports, accept to say that the vast majority of athletes I saw just gave their hearts and I, as a performer, do know a little about that, and heartily appreciate it. BUT also as a performer, I can say that having just heard the Canadian slam poet, Shane Koycsan, read his final poem of the games, from a paper, by a firepit in Vancouver, guitar strumming next to him. This was glorious, too:
Once upon a time,
We as the world figure skated on thin ice believed that each slice of life was served with something sweet on the side, And failure was never nearly as important as the fact that we tried.
That in the war against frailty and limitation we supplied the determination it takes to make ideas and goals the parents of possibility
Every nation is a member of this family
Not just one branch on one tree, but a forest whose roots make up a dynasty
So when I call you "Sis" or "Bro"
It's not lightly
and when I ask you to remember it's because the future isn't what it use to be
So remember now How once upon a time
We went the distance once more...
Let us remember all the moments that were and were not Let them point to something we can get and what we can get is what we got
Because all we have are the times between the moments we can connect to each dot
So live and remember
Let no one says we will be undone by times past the memories we are massing will stand as testiment that somehow we bend minds around the concept that it is the others within ourselves, that self knowledge can't be found on bookshelves, so who we are has no baring on how we appear
Look directly into every mirror realize our reflection is the first sentence to a story
And our story starts...
We were here.

So graceful. And how brave of our own little fourteen year old to try to mix it with these awesome ladies.
But some of it is so dangerous - have just been watching the mayhem in the four man bobsleigh.
Is Australia the only Southern Hemisphere country competing or is it just because our coverage (like everyone's surely) is a little skewed towards our own competitors?
Yesterday it was 42 (107 for some of you) so we banned outside play at school at lunchtime and made the kids sit in the airconditioning and watch all that snow and ice on TV. Funny world.

There are a few other southern hemi countries represented at the olympics. Mostly South American, but a couple of African countries also. Although still above the equator, Mexico has a 51 year old alpine skier who competed and Ghana also has an alpine skier who competed yesterday. Watched his run...it was really touching to watch as he was not there for the medals but for the opportunity and experience. He was so happy to have finished the race. The crowd cheering him on too was really something to hear. Closing Ceremonies tonight...wonder who's going to perform! There have been rumours of Michael Buble and Celine Dion. It's all very hush, hush!

The final exhibition was amazing. I especially admire the dancing pairs, but also as Stephane Lambiel, Evgeny Plushenko etc. I look forward to the World Cup!

Stéphane Lambiel has serious health problems with his knee. His return was only because of the Olympic Games. He lost the motivation to race a long time, but he wanted a medal. It is possible that Stephane ends amateur career now. It's unfortunate, he is famous figure skater. He wanted to study medicine a few years ago. Closing Ceremonies of WOG? So no, maybe tomorrow.

Well...what to say about the closing ceremonies?
Giant inflated Beavers, enormous hockey players, a kid dressed as a puck, canoes attached to costumed voyageurs, over sized Mounties, floating Moose, some beautiful leaves, Michael Buble singing "Maple Leaf Forever", La Bottine Souriante with a little Quebecois fire and 60,000 moose antlers with flashing noses!
I think I laughed the hardest when the Canadian broadcasters said that the stage looked like a souvenir shop at Niagara Falls.
