I was refering to the norther hemisphere's fall/winter, thus would be others spring/summer by then. The concern is that by then the virus will have mutated and cause severe cases - no matter where in the world you live. If it ends up in another huge city like Mexico City, it could have devistating effects. I still remember SARS in Toronto and the effect it had on people...that was 6 years ago.
I do agree though that my mind hasn't been on the economy as much, especially since new cases of the virus keep popping in my neighbourhood and children's schools! It is becoming a little too close to home! The best I can do is to teach them how to ward off viruses and not to panic if they get sneezed on!

I should elaborate on this...when the first case came up at my sons school his teacher had to go through proper hand washing technique and the preferred manner in which to cough and sneeze...into your sleeve. She then had to explain about germs and viruses and how they make you sick and how they are passed along by coughing, etc. Well, when you have a five year old with an active imagination...not a bad thing...I start to have a running commentary on the various individuals in his class who coughed and sneezed on him throughout the day and how he is going to get very sick! In regards to the number of cases in my area, the majority of them have been school kids and there is discussion on school closures due to the high numbers in the past week alone. My region is not that big, so you do start to wonder about exposure. All have been mild though!

Well, my youngest is now recovering from what we can only assume was the h1n1 virus. The doctors are no longer testing for it unless you end up in hospital or dead. This past weekend we have had 2 Ontario preteens die from it and both were sudden deaths. Although saying that, I am quite frustrated with the media coverage on all of this, especially now that the vaccine has been rolled out.
It IS a nasty virus and comes on like a bull in a china shop. He came home from school on Thursday just fine, happy, joking as usual. By dinner he had a sore throat and a fever. The next day, low grade fever. By Saturday he was progressively getting worse with extremely high fevers and difficulty breathing (the really scary part). It carries on from there but in the end is now on anitbiotics for pneumonia and a throat infection. The other really scary part is that he did not want to eat or drink. Our main concern was dehydration.
Stay healthy everyone!
