He was born on the Scottish Hebridean island of Lewis, but as to his roots, his paternal grandfather is from Germany. Scots-Irish on the maternal side. There is, in fact, a Scottish "Matheson" clan. There is still family back in Lewis as well as some of his parents generation and their children in England. Hans and his family moved to England before he was two.

From where did you get the information that his father's roots are in Germany? I do not question this, but I never read this .. Or that his mother has roots in Ireland.

I'm sorry, that sounds a bit aggressive to me. Let's just say that not everything makes its way online where everyone can do a double check. Can't you just take Gg's word for it?
We certainly don't want the little bits of information that come our way to dry up because of curiousity that's a little 'excessive'.
How about "oh, that's interesting. ididn't know that before."
Apart from explaining the origins of his name, which many people have wondered about, it has no further implications on his acting career, does it?

I didn't know about the Irish although I knew he and his dad used to sing at Irish folk festivals didn't they? Interesting as I'm in Dublin at the moment, so different to England. As for the German thing I'd guessed that from the song 'Christina' on Ado's album...the line "From an old German's daughter to the banks of the Rhine." Or something like that!

Like - to me this is free ... I have a large part of the family in Germany and roots in Germany (also in Italy), but I'm Czech.... I think that almost everyone has roots in different nationalities. It's nothing special. I thought at first that Hans has some Slav ancestors, he has an incredibly high cheekbones.

Well ladies, after following our young lad since 1997 I am not sure particularly where that info originated, though Ado's liner notes/lyrics seem as trustworthy a source as any, but as I believe I have mentioned I have fact verifying sources via his agency as well as published info via the industrial trades as I work in entertainment. "Matheson" isn't a hard name to find in teh Hebrides, there's a castle, and even you've never been, as I have, well, there it is, not that hard to see online. We've never gotten any particular verification that he has performed at any Irish festivals, though he was in Dublin for the shooting of TUDORS so who knows, maybe he played out at a pub or two. Wouldn't that be groovy. Many of his online profiles were written by unofficial sources who apparently got a little bit creative though. If you guys are truly concerned about my fact trustworthiness you can imdb me for legitimacy. I have neither motivation, nor time, to make this stuff up. I don't think I've ever mentioned anything that isn't in Virgil's vast archives of articles on her illustrious site, so if you want to do your research you can find it all there, I am sure. You do, of course, have to take the time to read them, and I have the advantage of having done so as they have come up, rather than having to go back and study them like I was preparing for an exam.
I'm his dog's psychiatrist, yeah that's it.
no, I'm his Haitian voodoo priestess, I even blessed his cat.
No. I'm his Buddhist body paint artist.
I'm a clairvoyant channeling all his thoughts... right now he's thinking he's going over to that blond model at the bar and buying her a drink..."hey baby what's your sign?!"
Come on 11 years of experience and an intimate online relationship with Virgil the all wise and wonderful (and an occassional drink together at the Cuba), with a little help from Daily Variety, what else does a girl need?
