I am reading the novel in english. It's a little difficult to me, because have some expressions in antique english...  but I'm doing my best, hehe!! ;D Someone have read the novel? What I've read until right now, is faithfully represented in the movie. I hope it continues this way, because I do not like movies which takes the title, the characters and some ideas from a book, and then transforms it to end up in something completely different to the original argument... Well done you! Thomas Hardy is not considered an easy read, even by English majors!
I think the miniseries is quite faithful to the novel in that it follows the plot and doesn't introduce many different interpretations or new characters etc.
I do think it's had to leave some things out and compress others. This is inevitable in a screen adaptation but can mean some of your favourite scenes get missed out.
When you reread a novel with a screen adaptation in mind, your perspective can be quite different. I've reread novels after I've heard hans will be in it, with a particular emphasis on that character that i might not otherwise have had.
The adaptation that most disappointed me, in terms of what they could have done with the character Hans played, was I Am Dina.
Hans was excellent casting for the Tomas of the book, but they made him just a plaything for Dina. In the novel he was so much more.

I agree with you. Maybe it's imposible put all the actions of one novel in a movie. Sometimes the adaptations give so much pleasure... some time a lot of anger!!!  So, Hardy is not considered an easy read... That means I have a great job to do! Well, I hope I can deal with this reading... I'll keep you informed of my advances! ;D |

I'm pretty sure I have a copy of the book lying around somewhere, although I have never gotten around to reading it. I really must do sometime soon!

I read it after watching the miniseries and to be honest I did focus on Alec more than I probably would have done. It's become one of my favourite reads though I have to admit, I do think the show was pretty faithful to the book, I found myself reading it picturing scenes from the show.

I read the novel long before I watched the mini series and it is one of those rare occasions when an adaptation lives up to the book and does not disappoint me
Saying that, I think I prefer Jude the Obscure to Tess

The boo is very tough to get through, but so worth it. It's quite good. I bought a copy a long time ago and read it recently.

I read it on sparknotes. It was much easier to understand the language on sparknotes as they summarize each chapter in modern English.
