or the musical version of the movie. There is a new musical version of LES MIS in development at the moment. December 2012 release scheduled.
Tom Hooper will direct (King's Speech), Hugh Jackman for Val Jean, Russell Crowe for Javert (after a good deal of rumors surrounding Paul Bettany for that role). Anne Hathaway is rumored to be attached for Fantine, Helena Bonham Carter for Md Thenardier, and Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars) but no news on Marius, though there has been speculation of Zac Ephron and of course Nic Jones who played the character in the West End. We'll see!
Universal Studios is launching this version.
(I thought we should continue discussion in its own thread www.imdb.com/title/tt1707386/It's been a long time coming and I'm sure the Hans version would have been more successful if people hadn't been disappointed that it wasn't a version of the musical. As I recall, it came out when the musical in its hey day, with numerous companies touring it all around the world. I remember discounting it on that basis and it wasn't until I became a Hans fan that I watched it. My opinion? Can't think of a better choice for Valjean (or anyone really) than my friend Hugh. Pity hes just a bit too old for Marius really. I'm on the fence about Russell Crowe for Javert. I guess he has the gruff persona and I don't think the musical demands for Javert are as high as for the other male leads - can he sing? Has he ever sung? We know Anne Hathaway can sing and I hope there'll be an Eponine in this version though it isn't cast yet. Is it? How about Taylor Swift? I have a lot of time for Tom Hooper as director but would be happier to see a director with more cred is music But the big question is - Marius We have a vested interest Better be someone good. Does this version need a "name"? Zak Efron? Some one from Glee?ETA - This is fresh news! I'm quite surprised to note that there's not yet a message board for this topic at IMDb. Felt sure there's be screaming and hand wringing going on over there.

Zac Ephron from "High School Musical" (1,2,3) and "Hairspray", as musical film/tv goes... he's only a casting speculation (and not on my part)
Lucy Hale from "Pretty Little Liars" might be Eponine (come on--they HAVE TO this time) or Cosette. But there's a bit of antifan-backlash against Nic Jonas for Marius.
To be frank, it might be hard for me to see Russell Crowe as Javert -- Geoffrey Rush seemed to be the perfect man for the job and Crowe's gruffness worries me that he play Javert ala Mr Bumble from Oliver Twist, constipated with a gun (I don't completely dislike Russell Crowe, that's just how I would picture the portrayal).
Thus far this version is full of Hollywood, and if Lucy Hale is Cosette, it will be interesting to see who they cast opposite her (though she has the same look of many of the West End Eponine's -- Lea Salonga notwithstanding, of course).
There is a imdb pro page, but it's not far enough into development yet to have an imdb page for non-subscribers. It keeps changing with the cast (rumored, attached, then recast), and originally there was a different director attached as well, but that is not all the strange on imdb pro.

Well, there is, I referenced it in my post above but there's not much info there. Found out more reading the various actor's boards - quite a lot of discussion on the HJ board and it seems he's a lock in. Seems Geoffrey Rush is rumoured as Thenardier - He'd have fun with that I reckon. Consensus seems to be Nic Jonas was quite weak as Marius and if this is anything to go by, I concur www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3Ea57dyP7ANot bad, he's trying his hardest but it reminds me of school recitals I have seen, not as great as the performance I saw at a WAAPA graduation recital and not as good as this (how it should be done) version. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJnjcX8skXk&feature=relatedI saw Amanda Seyfried's name mentioned - I wouldn't have a problem with that - she can sing and she's cute. (ETA But not as Marius obviously)

If someone isn't signed up to pro can they still see it in a link?
Geoffrey Rush in 2 Les Mis..es. That would be cool. I watch anything he's in. Opposite Helena Bonham Carter!
I don't know though...Maybe they should turn it on it's head and go for Amanda as Marius... ;-)
I agree with you on Nic Jonas... I would also like Eponine to be lipgloss and pushup bra free if possible (unlike the 25thway anniversary concert in which Nic Jonas performed as one of many 'Marius-es). I don't know about you guys, but lingerie just distrasts me from the whole "miserables" theme...

Well that's made me a very happy girly! Mind you, as long as it wasn't the horrendous Nick Jonas, I wouldn't have minded too much!

I believe that Hans has not achieved the paper because made the movie. I would have liked to see Hans in a musical.

I don't know all vocal registers of Hans Matheson, but Eddie Redmayne sings really very well. It has a lovely voice. Some years ago, I signed up to the audition of the musical of Queen: "We will rock You" in Madrid (Spain), but after hearing the voices of the girls who were also professional actresses, I said me: I better stay home! xD Hans has been very brave. "In order to be successfull in life one have to persevere." Hans, still fighting!

Urgent Casting Call for Singers, Dancers & Extras Put Out for LES MISERABLESBy Pietro Filipponi Published: November 11, 2011 - 2:21pm The film, directed by Oscar winning helmer of The King's Speech Tom Hooper, is prepping for filming and expected to hit theaters December 7, 2012. Les Miserables tells the story of unjustly convicted prisoner Jean Valjean, who has an uncanny level of physical strength. Determined to change his circumstances, the protagonist violates his parole, changes his names and becomes an industrious factory owner and eventually Mayor. In this new role, he becomes a champion of the oppressed, poor, and downtrodden. He saves a woman named Fantine, who has an illegitimate child, from a life of social exile and certain death. He also uses his considerable brawn to save a man from an overturned carriage. He can not escape his past however and is pursued by Javert, a police officer with an unflinching sense of justice. All this happens at a time of growing political revolution and unrest at the governments neglect of the common and poor.
