I think Jericho might be Hans Mathesons best TV role yet. It might be cuz it’s spread over 8 episodes so his character has rly been able to develop. Juicy secrets about his character, his family and who he rly is are slowly revealed in each new episode which keeps us intrigued. He plays a generally nice guy again (as always) in this show, but he’s extra sweet and different in that he falls in love with a poor widow this time and willingly tries to help her and be there for her 2 kids too. I know some ppl will say that Annie Quaintain cud crack a smile or too. She cud, yes. But she’s just lost her husband and has to appear tough and strong so that ppl don’t take advantage of her and her kids. I think that’s what Johnny admires abt her too.

In a way Jericho explores what’s it’s like falling in love for the second time in your life, especially in a time like the 1800s. Annie Quaintain is widowed with two teenagers and she was left unexpectedly penniless and then homeless due to choices her late husband made before he died. She must have trust issues and be wary of getting hurt, how her children will handle a new stepfather type figure, what society will say abt her etc. She and Johnny become friends and start to fall in love but Annie remains unsure of what to do until the very end.

Jericho reminds me a bit of the period film The Making of a Lady (2012), which is based on the 1901 book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which I adore! It’s very different but also very similar. It’s free on dailymotion.com.

There’s a YouTube interview with Hans Matheson about Jericho. It’s called ‘Jericho. Love is a compulsion for Annie and Johnny. If you watch the interview it sounds like he’s a real old romantic at heart in real life (and not just in the characters he plays). He says something like ‘You don’t go looking for love. You don’t say I’m going to love that person. It just happens. There’s a mystery to it and I quite like that’.

That’s the one! There’s also another interview with Jessica Raine talking in the first few mins and then Hans comes in and talks about how Annie and Johnny aren’t looking for love and love is a mystery. But I don’t know how to post the link onto this page. It’s on YouTube.

I’ve been watching episodes of Jericho again and a new question has struck me. What went on between Johnny and Isabella? It’s implied that it was a very short meaningless relationship for Johnny while Isabella seems to have misunderstood and fell in love. But that seems so out of character for Johnny. He seems like a gentleman. What happened between Johnny and Isabella??

Isabella was originally betrothed to Johnny's brother, Charles (Daniel Rigby - who is hilarious in "12th Night" and "...2 Guvnors" which recently was available to watch via National Theatre Live) - but during their betrothal, she has an affair with Johnny, who was a "rake", at the time, and left her and the family for Africa due to his indiscretion. Isabella refers to the affair, after his return, as passionate for her, and it seems that he led her to believe he was as well, at the time of the affair, but confesses it was a seduction, on his part, rather than love. It is obvious Isabella still harbors feelings, by the end of the series. He may have come to be a gentleman but in his younger days, The Prince was obviously a bit of a bad boy. Naughty, naughty

OK so that’s the back story behind Johnny and a bit of Isabella’s too. I understand the series so much better now. In episode 5 there was a talk between Johnny and Isabella and Johnny was saying ‘It was only one night’, but then Isabella says that they made plans to ‘runaway together’. There are still a few things I’m confused about though. Why is Johnny so cold to Isabella throughout the series? He’s cold to her in the beginning and episode 4 when she comes to visit him at work and in episode 6 when they’re walking together in the funeral procession and basically whenever he sees her. Also, was Isabella ever in love with Johnny’s brother? It’s implied that she wasn’t in the beginning but grew to love him. Until the episode 5 or 6 he doesn’t even seem to know about her and Johnny’s affair.
