Can you all believe it-Han's is turning 30 in August. I can't believe how much he's changed since the beginning(well, my beginning is Les Miserables).

He certainly has come a long way from those "boy on the verge of manhood" roles.
I think the mid- late twenties is a tricky time for male actors and many don't really come into their own until they are old enough to play real "adult" roles rather than "the young guy" I imagine it's been especially tricky for someone like Hans who looks young for his age though that does help in a role where the character must age over time as Yury did in DZ and to some extent Nero.
In some ways I think Hans is possibly too good-looking for his own good in that casting agents may tend not to consider him for those character roles which typically go to the less "handsome" guys and , let's face it, hans doesn't really have the physiacl stature for the hero roles. We've seen enough height neurosis on this board to know that the biological imperative means that most gals are looking for the "tall rugged type" to protect them even in their fantasy lives.
Still there must be heaps of suitable dramatic roles out there The real question is, where does Hans see his career going - he ultimately makes the choices.
I think the Earl of Essex sounds like just the sort of thing Now if only it were the big screen movie version *sigh*

you know actually, when I think of many iconically successful actors, those with staying power (who lived past their thirties, not James Dean, etc) many (not all of course) didn't really hit their stride until their thirties and then they had greater staying power. It seems they could straddle a larger range of roles -- young singleton looking for love and meaning, divorced father of young kids, addict, criminal, hero, adventurer... not just alot of work but a range of roles. They have a credibility and accessibility that has a stability with the audience that allows for a greater reach into possibility, because we can trust where they are coming from, and ultimately because we can more easily see them as more than just the particular role they are playing at the moment. But I mean Johnny Dep seems to be perpetually young and yet his range is huge, and time in film only growing. His transition to adult roles came through some playing some pretty radical characters, who may have been a little longer in the tooth than he actually seemed, but his characterizations were so memorable that it is the performance that makes you forget what age he is, or make it irrevelant, for that hour and whatever. And now we can see him playing a father figure in a quiet role and have no need for a suspension of trust.
Of course I am of the opinion that Hans can play anything. But you know his decisions and aims remain an enigma. Perhaps in many ways they are for him as well. Is he the kind of actor that goes to every audition he can and has done every part he's ever gotten? Some actors, even recognizable actors, are so afraid that they will never work again that they take everything they get. Michael Caine has professed to that paradigm and said in an acceptance speech for an award (GG, I think) "I made a lot or money,...and a lot of crap". It's not about a decision -- it's about having work -- or maybe not being without it. And frankly, there is so much mystery in what does well, it is always a risk, even with studio films. You can hedge you bets and do things that have all the earmarks of success, but there is never any guarantees, and if you are a performer who craves experimentation, well, then you're getting into risk of another level all together.
Maybe he has no grand plan in mind, just an openness to the possibility that lay, unknowable, ahead. I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I mean, I live my life intentionally, but there is nothing so wonderful as the unforeseen, unorchestrated glory of possibility.
