I was in the UK working when this thread was active -- but wasn't Chris Marshal's character the first to be killed -- shortly after (if we're going with the sin scenario) his "lust"ful act in the rain while on watch the first night?
But the idea itself makes sense to me. I'm happy for Michael that we're (finally) seeing it in video stores. He was really hopeful for a theater release, widely, to include the states.
What I found alittle more compelling than the religious subtext (mercy, freedom of thought, reciprocation, revenge, redemption, the inhumanity of war) -- was the cyclical nature of the experience in the trench itself -- the final twist, from the moment Shakespeare finds himself revisiting their last sane moment together around the fire, (discussing women and cheese) seeing himself in the eeerie green light of his own flare, until finally the entire scenario is revisited as he makes his way out -- with the final frame of the soldier he's "saved" breaking that fourth wall -- making complete dead on contact with the audience as the circle comes around. Anyone have anything on that?

According the above infformation, it was released in the US last June. I think I first saw it on the shelves of my Blockbuster here in Aus about October 2004
I just checked out Michaels's site and he's recently updated it. From the sound of things he has quite a few irons in the fire with a few projects looking promising to go ahead this year so good luck to him. ( I kind of feel we've been through so much 'together')
Gg I thought you're take on the ending had been dismissed as one of those lame 'it was all a dream endings' but the way you put it is much more fulfilling

I was thinking about the full head of hair comment that was made earlier. There's a reason why Hans had long hair in this one. Deathwatch explores religious themes, Heaven, Hell, Purgatory. Hans combs back his beautiful, dark locks during the opening credits. Vanity. Pure vanity. Plus the harmonica, for pleasure. He's the first one killed, thanks to his vanity. His character is more concerned with his looks than the enemy soldier being tortured. He's not the first one killed, Kris Marshall is.

Just checked out Michael Bassett's official site for the first time in a while - he's revamped it and added a heap of behind the scenes shots from Deathwatch. Pics from his newest picture "Wilderness" too. Check out the pic of cast, presumably at the end of the shoot, where they are all clutching champagne bottles. Nice coat Hans.

Last night I saw (for first time) Deathwatch film and I think is a great film because is not a story about war, it shows a lot of human feelings (the best and the worst like revenge). Mi favourite were Shakespeare and the doc characters. And what do you think about last scene? It was amazing!!!!

Yes, it's hardly a chick flick!
Best thing about it is the DVD commentaries. It has one of the most comprehensive set of extras of any DVDs I've seen with the exception of Lord of the Rings - especially impressive for a low budget film. (Reflecting the director's previous experience as a maker of electronic press kits) As well as all the making of and behind the scenes and deleted scenes stuff, there are three commentaries and the one with Laurence Fox Jamie Bell and Michael Bassett is pretty funny.
I can hardly see or hear about Laurence without hearing him saying "Go Foxy baby" in a certain way

OK guys - I'm over 50 minutes, and there isn't any reason to continue. Without him... Sorry... I felt it will surely be a "heavy food" for me - back to Zhivago, bye-bye... Anyway- it must have been a hard task for the crew to represent the horrible events of war. But I feel that it was not a kind of role that suits Hans' artistic soul. -Or my soul? I prefer seeing him romantical.

hey, that's interesting because, although the DVD extras on my copy - Region 2 - are comprehensive, there's no interview with Hans at all. What does he say? Is it about the rats? The extras on mine include three commentaries, some interviews and behind the scenes pics and a director's film diary. IMO the extras are better than the film itself We'll have to come to some arrangement

I loved this film, I watched it with my dad because it's not really my type of movie. But being a big fan of Kris Marshall and Laurence Fox, and of course Hans, I had to watch it. I thought it was interesting in one of the extra scenes, the scene where Laurence's character kills Hans' character, and it was only one slight difference and it changed the whole tone of the film.
Even my dad, who is not a Hans fan and is always slagging him off, had to admit that he was good in it. Since I've got him to watch Canone Inverso which he didn't like which completely shocked me, because my mum and grandad loved it. And Mojo which my dad admitted Hans was good in.
But, I've got the region 2 version and there's no interview with Hans. Laurence Fox mentions him in his little bit saying he's such a sweet guy etc.
