What I found alittle more compelling than the religious subtext (mercy, freedom of thought, reciprocation, revenge, redemption, the inhumanity of war) -- was the cyclical nature of the experience in the trench itself -- the final twist, from the moment Shakespeare finds himself revisiting their last sane moment together around the fire, (discussing women and cheese) seeing himself in the eeerie green light of his own flare, until finally the entire scenario is revisited as he makes his way out -- with the final frame of the soldier he's "saved" breaking that fourth wall -- making complete dead on contact with the audience as the circle comes around. Anyone have anything on that? I watched Deathwatch for the first time last night. I’m generally not into war films but I was intrigued by the supernatural twist that has been used to advertise this film. I didn’t get any “seven deadly sins” approach to this film (as was suggested earlier in this thread), but there is a definate religious aspect to this film as Gg mentions above. Maybe what this film is attempting to convey is that, through Shakespeare, we see everything that is wrong with going to war. How soldiers watch whilst other soldiers are being driven to the edge of insanity and beyond because that is what war can do to a man. Maybe what this film is really trying to tell us is to keep faith in a time of adversity. And to keep a watchful eye on everything that happens around us!

Like so many here in this thread have said before, I, too, don't like "war" movies. I distinctly remember DW being broadcast a couple of times before I knew about Hans, and I didn't bother to turn on my TV. But of course DW is not your typical war movie after all. I have re watched DW and now I believe, all 10 men of Y Company are already dead, when they arrive at the trench, the fog was gas after all. How we last see Sgt. Tate during the battle, hanging in the barbed wire, the sudden daylight (what happened to the night?), compass and watches not working, the intercepted radio message: aren't these all hints? I also think it's not a coincidence, that there were 10 soldiers. It's a classic set-up. I was reminded of the A. Christie novel And Then There were None / Ten Little Soldiers. Michael Bassett did a great job in creating this realistic set. You can practically feel the cold and dampness and after 90 min looking at this constant downpour and all this mud I longed for a hot bath although it was a warm August evening when I last watched the movie.

didn't most of the actors get tonsillities or something and ended up on drips, because they where always in water surley must have been a tough shoot for them.

I doubt it'd be tonsilitis but I could see a severe shared case of pneumonia from the rain soaked clothes all the time....

I was at my mother's house last night and we started to watch Deathwatch on more 4 I knew it wasn't the sort of film my mother would watch but I left it on, and you know the scene when Hans is in the trench and is standing by one of the dug out rooms listening to the others talking my mum said oohh he's good looking, looks like that Doctor Zhivago, I said Mum it is Doctor Zhivago" I had a big smirk on my face, Mum has good taste even at 74.
