I spent last night in heaven. Watching Hans in a leading role is so much nicer than trying to catch glimpses of him in the background!
Beware of SPOILERS. SPOILERS. SPOILERS.
I have to say I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie. I knew the reviews hadn't been very good - and although I don't usually let critics determine whether I see a film or not, I didn't have high expectations. But I liked this movie. A lot. Was it a good film? Probably not. But I liked it. I have only watched it once, so my review is based on only one late night viewing.
I thought Hans did an amazing job. He really has to portray a wide range of emotions through the movie, and some are quite intense. He laughed, cried, was depressed, in despair, sexually attracted (...or was that me...no, he does that too!), angry, fed up... I believed him when he was longing for Tiffany during the tattoo scene, or devestated after Lear's father is killed and his situation seems even more bleak. I felt his anger and pain when confronting Alex about sleeping with Fiona.
His comic timing is right on in the appropriate scenes. The saucepan was adorable (even though I couldn't figure out what it had to do with anything...did he sleep with the stupid thing on???) And I have to add, he looks fabulous doing it all. (I can't help it, it's true)
The plot in general was interesting. I liked the twists involved, and it got quite complex. There were major flaws, such a complete lack of character development. I didn't feel like I really knew what was up with Virgil...in fact I never really figured out what his job was supposed to be. And all of a sudden his parents were abroad? Of course they were... I don't understand why him and Fiona are continually cheating on each other, and what's up with the cocaine use. During the first scene with Alex, I was almost under the impression that they were all swingers!
I also figured out "who did it" quite early on.
I was impressed at the unexpected comedy. The two cops were funny, although I think that one intelligent cop and one stupid rookie cop teamed up as partners is really overdone in film today and was quite unoriginal. But funny to me, none the less. I enjoyed how the scenes of Fiona telling Alex she was ill "down there" and him trying to force himself on her were mixed in with the Chelsea football game scenes. "And she scores!"
In fact, the scene where Tiffany's "family" was watching the game reminded me of the scene in Still Crazy where they are all watching the interview. But in Bodywork, Hans is so cute when he's hiding his face in anticipation for the score.
Didn't notice much about the music, except for a long scene with no dialogue and just the music and lyrics. I must go back and pay more attention to those next time.
So, this is my first review. Let me know about things I may have missed so I can watch for them. Let the obsession begin!!
I'd be interested to hear the reviews of others as well. I didn't realize this board was an extension of one that had been around a while, so I missed all previous conversations/reviews/Hans gushing.
