I watched this for the first time a few weeks ago and quite honestly didn't understand the story (I may just be really stupid) So anyway, last night I decided to watch it again and it suddenly clicked, I was like oh my word! How did I not understand this sooner!? I really enjoyed the film that much more, because I understood it, I don't feel so silly anymore |

I still don't get it, was rachel having having a relationship with angus the ghost or patrick pretending to be angus who killed patrick with the hook and who the hell jumped of the balcony angus the ghost or patrick the ghost I think it's all to do with whoever has on the long black rain mac, I would like to think that it was patrick who did fall in love with her in the end then angus the ghost killed him because he must have been watching what he was doing to her I assume it was patrick as the ghost threw himself of the balcony because he gave her the little boat. oh my gosh I will have to go and watch it again now.  but i love this film because it was filmed in north wales  |

My take was that it was Patrick until the scene when, after it is revealed to us the Patrick is playing Angus as part of the maniacal plot, he returns to the lighthouse and encounters Angus' ghost, who effectively Possesses Patrick's body. From that moment on. Throwing himself over the balconey. Is just that doomed repetition thing that will perhaps allow. Angus to finally rest in peace-gavind effectively saved Rachel and paying his penance for the inadvertent death of his wife. Does that make sense?

Oh, he possessed him!? I did wonder that but then just kind of brushed it off. I know Patrick saw Angus' ghost, but I wasn't sure what to make of it after that. Maybe I didn't understand it fully :s
But I just watched it with my dad (who is always slagging Hans off) and he said he has a new found respect for Hans as an actor, I was like: 'result!'

oh i see so angus spirit possesd patricks body that's why we don't see his body , because when rachael's husband goes to the light house he see's who he thinks is patrick coming down the stairs's with the hook thing and patrick/angus says "no not patrick" so angus kills he husband using patrick's body, that explain's things better thanks. Another question what was patrick doing to Rachael's best friend(forgot her name) when they met I assumed he did the same thing to her as he was doing to rachael so that's how they met or am I wrong again Oh that's it I feel a movie night coming on I gonna have to watch it again |

I did wonder what he was doing when he met Sharon (Rachel's best friend) We were never actually told I don't think, if we were then I missed it.

go back and watch that scene -- he's brilliant in it, I feel, because all along we're all in this semi-fascinated awe of Angus and then these events happen, and your suspicions grow, the ambiguity mounts, until you realize in that scene exactly what has happened. That Patrick has been hired to deceive, seduce, and mentally destry Rachel, that the haunting by her son is independent of that plot, and that he is in fact in love with her. His romantic heroism is destroyed with the change of his accent. I thought his performance in that scene was really effective. What I always wondered was what the unuttered answer was to the question he poses to Sharon, "Do you remember what I was doing when we met?"... all she does is shutter and say "uhhuh".... ew... what WAS he doing? The imagination goes wild -- murdering an eldery woman? Raping a cat? Defacing an infant? Whatever is was, it was something bad enough to make a tabloid journalist shiver...!!!!
