I'm having a hard time with this movie. I got it from a lovely little bird, and as much as I tried last night I cannot seem to get into it. I feel kinda sorry for Johnny (mind you I only made it about maybe.....30 minutes in?) and the way he seems to be treated by everyone, he's their doll more than anything. Baby makes me very nervous and usually I like the weird characters like him but at the same time the look on his face reminds me of Billy Drago and he just...*shudders*
I'm gonna try watching it again tonight but the language and the way things move...I feel like I'm watching a surreal-er version of Clockwork Orange (not violent obviously but more for the fact that I have no idea what is going on)

Well...thanks to a forum friend I have had an opportunity to finally see this film...THANKS!
I'm going to definitely have to watch it again (and again) to fully get the story. I wasn't able to watch in one sit which also affected my view and I had forgotten things that had happened...
I loved the banter between the characters...didn't catch everything...a lot of regional slang...but I found it very true to life...a bunch of guys hanging out and jabbing at each other.
Hans' character was amazing and I was holding my breath in the hopes that he would sing!! I was not disappointed!

Soul, a 'howler' is an outrageous mistake, typically used to describe the kind of mistakes schoolkids make in exam papers when they really don't know or are trying to be smart-alec. Eg The sun never set on the British Empire because the British Empire's in the East and the sun sets in the West. and others. Here are some examples of misuse of English

Hans: (Guardian; 11/27/1998) What was it like having Harold Pinter crack on to you in Mojo?
Frightening. They used the first take where Harold got most of his lines wrong. The scene consequently has a real edge to it which people have picked up on.
Jez Butterworth: (The Sunday Telegraph; 6/28/1998) But despite all my well-honed stage-vs-screen theories, it's chilling to reflect that the most riveting scene in the film is a single shot of Harold Pinter and Hans Matheson, which lasts for six minutes. It's the most "theatrical" scene in the film, and the most filmic. It was never even in the play.
(Film-Diary) 13 December 1996 After days of gruelling, bloody footage this couch scene is a delight. After the briefest of rehearsals we shoot, and the first take is unstoppable. I shoot a back-up, and some cover just in case, but this is the one. Hans is infinitely subtle.
When re watching Mojo with the script at hand (what a great help), I especially paid attention to the "couch scene", because both Jez Butterworth and Hans mentioned it in interviews. There are some variations in the phrasing by Pinter when delivering his lines and one time he cuts Hans short and won't let him finish his sentence. All the time, Hans is sticking closely to the script. You have to admire how swiftly he reacts and goes on with his text so the viewer doesn't notice and at the same time is giving a great performance! The greatest departure from the original script though is when Pinter starts with his "tickle, tickle" after Johnny has sung only 2 verses of Ting-a-Ling, this should have been after the 3rd verse. Too bad, really, we don't get to hear this.
This is missing:
(after the second verse) Sam Ross..........Did you make that up? Silver Johnny......No, it's Buddy. It's "Ting-a-Ling". SR....................It sounded improvised. Sorry? SJ.....................It's just out. It's called "Ting-a-Ling". SR....................Ting-a-Ling SJ.....................Yes. SR....................It's very good. Is there more? SJ (sings)..........The way they laugh, the way they...
Some of the things I learned from reading the diary: I always wondered why in the very first scene Sweets&Potts walk around London with rolled up towels under their arms. There should have been a swimming pool scene, which ended up on the cutting room floor. It was very cold and rainy during the shooting. Not fun for the little kids, splashing around in the fountain at Trafalgar Square in the icy November water! The woman playing the "knuckle sandwich girl" is (was?) Jez Butterworth's girlfriend. And Aidan Gillen (Baby) is wearing a wig throughout the whole film. I wasn't aware of that.
