Oh my god this is so cool! I've always been interested in the stories about Elisabeth bathory! A movie about her with Hans in it...how much better can it get? I hope his role is big. Elizabeth batory was a countess who used to bathe in young womens blood because she believed it would keep her young and beautifull. She killed over 600 women for this purpose! Here you can read more about her: www.abacom.com/~jkrause/bathory.html

What fun! So far all I've found is that he's playing Merisi. Anyone know who that is?

Yeah...sounds like it may be a bit "bloody", as well. Goofy me..I like vampire movies. And all the old werewolf flicks, too. Not the real gory stuff they come out with now!

This sounds like it could be interesting... I know I said please Hans, no more Euro-pudding, but I can see why this would be right up his alley. I've never heard of this director but apparently he is highly regarded as the "Fellini of the East" and Anna Friel wanted the part badly enough to write to him in Slovakian. I'm now hoping that Hans' is a significant role - he may THE international star in this movie - and of course we can hope that it gets on the Festival circuit and becomes highly regarded, or even huge. But at the moment I'll settle for available. Here's the link to Jakubisko's Official SiteIMDB has Hans' role as Merisi but a couple of Slovak sites state his role as that of Caravaggia. Anyone able to translate? Talianskeho barokového maliara Caravaggia hrá škótsky herec Hans Matheson (na foto vpravo). „Juraj Jakubisko si Caravaggia nakomponoval do deja, pretože celý film vizuálne stvárňuje do jeho obrazov. Viac nebudem prezrádzať, ale príbeh je vzťahom Alžbety a Caravaggia popretkávaný,“ prezradila nám výkonná riaditeľka spoločnosti Jakubisko Film Markéta Záhradníková. Why do I get this strange sense of deja vu, calling for translations?

I was looking up "Merisis" and Caravaggia is part of his name. Italian painter famous for doing beautiful paintings of the saints.

Interesting possibility.
Michaelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1573-1610) was certainly a contemporary of Elizabeth Bathory (1560-1614) but is there any evidence that he ever left Italy or that she went to Italy?
I guess it could be the same Caravaggio/a. Certainly his paintings indicated a tormented and/or twisted mind and his is an interesting story in itself. In fact I've often thought Hans should play an artist (he's been a musician and a poet!)

According to Mr Igo, a contributor to the boards at IMDb who seems to be very knowleadgable about this project Yes, it is the painter. Jakubisko says there exists a rumour about the relationship between Caravaggio and Bathory. He probably found something during his research and he is going to portray them as secret lovers.

Has anyone seen "Caravaggio" (1986) with Sean Bean, Dexter Fleming?
peasent italians (my people,...none of us can spell) took the name of their lords -- so he was both a Marisi and, his lord's name, Caravaggio.
But won't he be great -- the painter was suppose to have wounded a soldier, thrown a plate of artichokes at a waiter, been expulsed from a knighthood! Light from shadow, depicting prostitutes as saints -- sounds like a good fit to me!
