Well of course the conspiracy theory is ridiculous - but it's funny  The more likely reason for the delay, lack of distribution, is that it's just not very good. The budget may be high by Slavak standards but for an international movie, the amount spent is chicken feed - and he has tried to do battle scenes, sumptuous costumes etc Maybe this sort of thing is part of the reason? |

Maybe if Bathory was an American production it would have a higher distribution. Probably. That's the problem about non American movies. A lot of countries have some really interesting stories to tell, events or historical periods that would be interesting for movies. But those countries lack money and international support. It's the same for France for instance. A lot of French movies are good but... French... so, no distribution outside France. And a lot of movies would have been good, have a lot of potential, but not a high enough budget to do a very interesting and valuable movie. It's always the same problem. That's sad.

It would have to be more than just American, to have assured distribution -- it would have to be inside the studio system. It seems to fall in a place between the intimate, smaller independent/foreign films and the large scale epics -- it's budget getting buzz for its size relative to other Czech films, but still on a bit of a shoe-string for its ambitions. I wish it was being screened more, getting seen at more festivals. But there is no way to know -- perhaps there have been offers on the table, but they didn't live up to expectations. The thought of people filing for bankruptcy -- even if its just a rumor -- it's not the first time. People gives their hearts and souls to realizing their ambitions, it is a hard thing that filmmaking is really such a high risk.

I sent an e-mail to Budapest Film a few days ago asking about the Hungarian realese of Bathory. Now I got the answer...  As for we had misgivings in connection with the realese on 13th March - it is postponed until September, long after Karlovy Vary FF.  "Wake me up, when September ends..." |

Wow, looks a bit too gory for me. I may have to pass if it does ever get released in U.S. And it looks like in that one scene where the dog is running towards her to protect her that he gets the "sword"..hate to watch that kind of stuff.
